Farm-to-Township: Connecting the Food Value Chain.

Our Farm-to-Township strategy is built around a simple commercial opportunity: bringing agricultural supply and township demand into a more connected distribution system.

By developing stronger relationships between suppliers, distribution operations and township businesses, Modu Mayo aims to improve how food reaches local markets.

Current Mamelodi trading provides the starting point for this proposed network.

The Farm-to-Township model

From Agricultural Supply to Local Markets.

Farmers and Food Suppliers

Work with established food suppliers and progressively develop opportunities for agricultural producers able to meet the network's product, volume and quality requirements.

Distribution and Trade Centres

Develop facilities that support purchasing, receiving, handling, storage, bulk sales and coordinated distribution.

Township Businesses

Supply food traders, greengrocers, spaza shops, caterers, restaurants and other local businesses whose purchasing needs underpin demand.

Communities

Through the township businesses serving them, consumers gain access to food moving through a more connected value chain.

Our model is designed to evolve from the mobile bulk-trading activity already operating in Mamelodi. Permanent distribution centres and direct farmer-supply arrangements form part of future development.

Our Gauteng growth strategy

Four Corridors. One Farm-to-Township Vision.

Trading now · Centre planned

Mamelodi / Tshwane

Our starting point: current mobile bulk trading, with the first permanent Distribution and Trade Centre planned for Mamelodi West.

Strategic expansion

Soweto / Johannesburg

A potential distribution corridor serving the township food economy in western Johannesburg.

Strategic expansion

Tembisa / Ekurhuleni

An eastern Gauteng corridor offering opportunities to connect supplier and township business demand.

Strategic expansion

Vaal / Sedibeng

A southern Gauteng corridor with potential links to agricultural production and township food markets.

These corridors represent our strategic growth direction rather than four existing or approved distribution sites.

Market access for farmers and suppliers

Building Demand-led Routes to Township Markets.

The long-term opportunity for farmers and food suppliers lies in reaching township businesses through a more organised distribution model.

Modu Mayo currently sources fresh produce through Fresh Produce Markets and frozen meat through an established wholesaler.

As demand, infrastructure and trading capacity develop, we intend to explore more direct relationships with agricultural producers and additional supply partners.

Our approach is to build supply relationships around commercially viable products, purchasing volumes, quality requirements and genuine market demand.
