Our Purpose
Improve access to food markets by connecting farmers, food suppliers and township businesses through more effective distribution.
Modu Mayo is a South African food distribution business developing a Farm-to-Township model that connects agricultural supply with township markets.
Our approach combines practical food trading, supplier relationships and the development of distribution infrastructure to serve township businesses more effectively.

proper name grassroots
Grassroots.
Origin: From the Sepedi word modu, meaning “root”.
Our name reflects our belief that lasting growth begins at the roots — with people, communities and the businesses that sustain them.
It represents our commitment to building agricultural and township market connections from the ground up.
Modu Mayo's journey begins in Mamelodi, where township traders buy and sell food every day, often working with limited storage capacity, tight margins and fragmented supply arrangements.
Through our current mobile bulk-trading operation, we are building practical experience in sourcing, customer demand and food distribution.
That experience informs a bigger ambition: to establish a network of Distribution and Trade Centres capable of bringing agricultural supply and township demand closer together.
Our first proposed centre is in Mamelodi West. Over time, we aim to extend the model into other strategic Gauteng markets.
The long-term opportunity is not simply to sell food. It is to develop a commercially sustainable distribution model that connects more participants across the food value chain.
